# Life Is Elsewhere

*Milan Kundera, 1973*

## Summary

Jaromil is conceived during an affair his mother has with a student who disappears before he is born. She constructs his entire identity around the conviction that he is destined for artistic greatness, a conviction that protects her from examining the smallness of her own life. Jaromil grows up believing in his poetic vocation with the absolute certainty of someone who has never had a self separate from his mother's projection.

Kundera's satire is aimed at the young revolutionary artist: the posture of passionate engagement with history, the belief that poetry and political commitment are natural allies, the grandiosity of someone whose interior life has never been tested. Jaromil genuinely loves poetry and genuinely believes in the revolution, but he also betrays his girlfriend to the secret police in a moment of jealous stupidity, and these things coexist in him without irony.

The title, attributed to Rimbaud, names the central self-deception: the young poet's conviction that real life is always somewhere other than where he is, always contingent on a not-yet-arrived future.

Kundera is working the same material as The Unbearable Lightness of Being: Czech history under Communism, and the traffic between private psychology and public ideology. Jaromil is younger and more contemptible than the characters there, which gives Kundera more room to be cruel. The cruelty is the point.
