*Robert Anton Wilson, 1983*

## Summary

Wilson opens with the reality tunnel: the model of the world your nervous system builds out of whatever input reaches it, which you then mistake for the world. The book is an attempt to make you notice your own tunnel and consider changing it.

The organizing structure is Leary's eight-circuit model: eight evolutionary stages of the nervous system, from the oral bio-survival circuit (safety/danger, approach/withdrawal) through higher circuits governing tribal belonging, symbolic manipulation, social roles, and eventually what Leary called post-terrestrial consciousness. Wilson takes the model seriously as a heuristic rather than a literal neurological map.

Every chapter ends in exercises, practical and slightly absurd. One of them: for a week, believe you are the most important person in every room you enter, and notice what changes. The next week, believe the opposite. The point is not to install a new belief but to watch how fast the nervous system adapts to whichever model it is given and starts generating confirming evidence.

Wilson's tone is deliberately playful and his intellectual debts are eclectic (Korzybski's General Semantics, Gurdjieff's self-observation techniques, William James, Husserl, and Leary). The book gets shelved as New Age and as radical skepticism, and it is both at once.

The most durable idea is that you cannot use a map to map the territory it is a map of. Any system of thought that claims to describe reality without acknowledging its own constructed nature is philosophically naive.
