# Founder — Marl Studio

## About the company

Marl Studio is a studio built on one bet: AI has made software cheap to build, so distribution is the moat. Every product it launches is also a go-to-market experiment, and every launch adds to a playbook of what works.

## What I did

- A studio that builds software and its distribution together: launch a product, work out its go-to-market, grow it, then do it again.
- Bay and Bay Effects: free AI video and motion graphics editors for Mac, Windows and Linux, laid out like Premiere Pro and After Effects. Transcription, masks, roto and face tracking run on the user's machine. They started from storytold's open-source editors and are rebuilt on ashlar.
- ashlar: my Rust app framework on egui, where every action is a command an AI agent can run.
- Marl GTM: our Instagram go-to-market tool, built from an open-source base. It schedules posts, DMs people who comment a keyword, and has an AI agent propose posts for approval.
- Next: hull, a game engine in beta, with Shroud as its first game.

## The longer version

I started Marl Studio in August 2026, after AuraX taught me that a better product doesn't buy you time. We had the quality lead and still ran out of runway, and the thing we never got good at was getting the product to people.

The first products are Bay, an AI video editor laid out like Premiere Pro, and Bay Effects, AI motion graphics laid out like After Effects. Both are free for Mac, Windows and Linux. To move fast they started from storytold's open-source editors, and since August they have been rebuilt on ashlar, with the agent layer, accounts, the release pipeline and the AI features added on top. They ship a release every two to three days.

ashlar is the part I'm proudest of: a Rust application framework where everything is a command, so a menu, a shortcut, a CLI and an AI agent all drive the same registry, and an idle app does no work at all.

The distribution side runs on Marl GTM, which schedules our Instagram posts, DMs people who comment a keyword, and lets an agent propose posts for me to approve. When everyone agrees distribution is the moat, being good at GTM stops being one. What compounds is distribution built into the product: every Bay project file someone shares is a working demo.
